Phyllis Schoenberger

Tai Chi & Qigong Instructor

A registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in nursing and masters in gerontology, I have a long nursing career that has given me many opportunities to care for so many beautiful individuals. I have worked in management, education, gerontology, pediatrics, dialysis, orthopedics, home health, psychology, school nursing, and restorative exercise. My 25 years working as a gerontological nurse has allowed me to listen and learn from older adults.  Specializing in dementia, I am a certified dementia practitioner.

I am currently working towards a bachelor in exercise science at Akron University.  My four year goal is to get into a PhD program.  My research would present the question; does the processes of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and kinesiology not only help to prevent and delay physical diseases, but does it also preserve neural plasticity, and optimal brain health even into very old age?

My background in dance has allowed me to perform in ballet, tap, and jazz and through dance; I have developed a love for music and movement. In the past, I have taught yoga and I am currently leading Silver Sneaker exercise, sports, and cognition classes twice weekly for people who have dementia and I also have a weekly functional exercise program for individuals age 50 and older, named Phytness with Phyllis that focuses on flexibility, stretching, strength training, cardiorespiratory fitness and balance.
